Style Frames

A couple of style frames for a recent pitch.
The frames were illustrated by our very talented friend Pete McDonald - petejmcdonald.com

Character bust

Part 3. This one was to show the treatment of the facial features and expressions.

Joel Character

This is the second post in the series (girls being the first). This character was directly inspired by our very lanky flame operator Joel. Who by the way is killing it with his new website offering smoke and flame tips and tutorials. Check it out: joelosis.com

Girls

Some of our character development illustrations. More to come.

3D Character Experiment

We've been having a look at some of the open source character rigs available online for Maya. Here's a little test we made using the Andy Rig.

Cup O' Doodle

I stumbled across this awesome blog yesterday. As a kid, my favourite show to watch was Mr Squiggle and it was also a game I used to love to play in my school books during class. It is really cool to see some really quality artists still playing this game. It is a great project and a super fun way to get inspiration, so I thought I would have a crack at it. Hope you enjoy!

Check out the all the other great submissions here.

Original Doodle

My final one.

Faces exploration

Some randoms.

Budgies

Some quick character illustration purely for the enjoyment of the exercise. My family used to have a buch of budgies when I was a kid. They always exuded so much attitude which I wanted to capture in the drawing. I was really trying to play with the overall shape and work out what makes an easily recognisable silhouette of a bird.
I like to think these two are the old bitter couple, keeping an eye on everything that is going on.

Creation Bee - Updated

We updated bee animation so you could see his side and added some pollen particles on that interact with the bee and his movements. We also did some more work to the grade, and gave it a bit more time.
Hope you enjoy the update.

(Original Post)
A cool little in house animation we have been working on. We set ourselves the challenge of creating a photorealistic bee in an architectural environment. It all came together through studying the way bees move, their textures and finally some sweet character animation by Shaun.

Engine Web Banner - Shoot

The first in a series of new Engine web banners.
We decided to do a series of attention grabbing banners letting people know what it is we do best. Animated frame by frame by our epic 2d character animator Nick (ie: Cowboy #1)
Stay tuned for more.

The final showdown

And our reference cowboys Nick and Josh sorting out a disagreement in the studio.

Future Punks Character Concepts

Some futuristic concepts from our past.

Hollywood Girl

Getting in touch with our feminine sides.

Dubbo Film Festival

We were recently asked to animate existing assets for the Dubbo Film Festival TVC.
We used the DUIK plugin again and were very happy with the results for such a short
turn around job.

Animal Motion Test

Final TVC

Dancer - Motion Test

Here's a motion test where we used DUIK for the first time, a plugin for After Effects which lets you create IK bones for your characters. It was a lot of fun animating this guy, and we would definitely use the plugin again.

Sketch Club Illustrations

A few experimental life drawings from sketch club, turned out to be nice vector portraits.
The fist was a study of continuous simplified lines, giving depth through contrast between light and shade with the use of gradients.
The second, a study of of the face using facets as geometric planes in a 3d space.

Arvo Beer - You Spoke We Brewed You Decide

Phase two of the Perfect Lager Project saw the introduction of two lagers 34 and 51. After gathering all the data about the perfect lager moment, the brewers set to work and produced these two brews. Phase 2 helped us find out more about the characteristics of each brew and asked us to make our decision as to which one should stay.
